Sam Peacock has worked professionally as a painter since 2007, graduated from Coventry University in 1998 with a BA in Fine arts. Immediately taken a sabbatical from painting full time to teach art practice at several institutions in London until returning to full time painting.
He's worked on several collections over the years and has solo showed in Berlin, Sydney and London with several more shows planned into 2016. Recently undertaken a 6 month project focusing on the effects of Hydraulic Fracturing within the UK and gave an artist’s response in the form of 52 separate images, each titled with a place name where planned fracking was to take place.
His first solo in Sydney looked into the unseen landscape in NSW which culminated in taking the idea to London and exhibiting works based on site visits, bushwalks, and rock and earth samples collected whilst travelling and exploring.
Peacock has also taken responsibility as arts co-ordinator for the “Stratford Fringe Festival” curating yearly shows across the town.
As his work has matured over the years, he has kept material links to previous collections as motifs within the main body of the work, retaining the sugar and coffee elements, the strips of liquorice which define the horizon line, the carbolic soap alongside building materials such as plaster, the element of intense heat to distort and infuse colour, the blinding areas of light tamed by a darkened varnish.
Inspired by rural and costal landscapes, Sam Peacock has challenged the traditional notion of landscape painting in every aspect of his work. Peacock’s, unique interpretation of landscape painting involves the use of non-traditional oil base paints, varnishes, coffee grains and a variety of raw materials, all composed on a sheet of steel. Colour, being a major aspect of the work is inspired by the colours of the land itself with each pallet being created from one specific location.
Experimenting with the balance of colour and light on steel over the last 30 years and exchanging the traditional paintbrush for a roller and a blow torch, Peacock’s unique take on art has propelled Peacocks’ career, making him one of the most sought after contemporary landscape artists of our time.
Peacocks portfolio ranges from independent gallery shows to large scale art installations for prestigious hotels and extensive interior design projects. Last year his art made its debut as a public installation piece, commissioned by Islington council, in central London. The commission stand 8 meters tall cladding brick work with steel and colour, letting the light reflect of the surface of the steel and providing an ever changing landscape using light as a medium to explore.
Other notable works can be seen in the Novotel, Canary Wharf where Peacock created his largest art work to date, spanning over 62 square meters of wall and using just over half a tonne of steel. This permanent wall covering, and installation piece completely immerses you in the rural and man-made landscape projections of Peacocks world.
Each in-situ project is carefully crafted with on-site visits taking place to examine the space, explore light sources and how the works can transform the area.
Sam Peacock is represented by galleries in London, Nottingham, Germany, Australia and online.
